A Note from the Meeting Chairs-2018

A Collaborative Effort in Perioperative and Pain Medicine

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Members of ICAA and CSA, and Meeting Participants,

We are excited to present the program of the 2018 ICAA Annual Scientific Symposium and the First ICAA-CSA joint symposium in the USA. This is a full day event loaded with many hot topics in the field and top-class world experts. The event will be held on October 12, 2018 in Toland Hall at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Parnassus Campus in San Francisco, California. The Toland Hall was built in the 1920’s. It’s an old theatre-style lecture hall with an ornate ceiling and a fresco of California medical history covering every inch of the walls.

The aim of this ICAA annual gathering and ICAA-CSA joint scientific symposium is to provide a platform for our ICAA and CSA members to have outstanding academic and scientific exchanges, and to partake in leadership roles in the areas of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine.

There will be a warming up academic activities at night of October 11th, 2018 focusing on critical monitoring and perioperative outcome, this activity will extend to a special session in the morning of the October 12th, 2018. The full day meeting on October 12th starts with a brief opening followed by a unique introduction of medical history presented by Dr. Ronald Miller. A special key session on “Leadership opinion on anesthesia clinics and patient outcome” was well-planned with honorable speakers and panelists who are the leaders in the field including the president of the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI), Dr. Angela Edward; Dr. Fleisher, the ex-president of Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA) and the Director of the Brain Initiative of American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA); Dr. Jin Liu, the ex-president of Chinese

Society of Anesthesiology (CSA); Dr. Yuguang Huang, the President-elect of the CSA. This session will be moderated by Renyu Liu, the president of the ICAA (ICAA), and Dr. Xiangyang Guo, the treasurer of CSA. During the noon time, the problem of the opioid usage is the perioperative usage will be discussed. Experts from both ICAA and CSA will be discussing perioperative pain, opioid usage, ERAS with special focus on delirium. Dr. Roderic G. Eckenhoff, the chief scientific officer of the brain initiatives for ASA will be updating on such brain initiatives, followed by specific presentation from Drs. Dongxing Wang and Daqing Ma.

We have a new hosting department program organized by our local host chair, Dr. Zhonghui Guan. Dr. Catherine Chen will be presenting her thoughts on preoperative testing. Dr. Chen published a special article on “Preoperative Medical Testing in Medicare Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery” in New England Journal of Medicine while she was a resident (N Engl J Med 2015; 372:1530-1538). This is very inspiring for these who want to accomplish their research in premium medical journals.

As a tradition, we dedicated one hour for scholars in training in our ICAA member’s lab followed by award presentation. The academic mission extended to the night function with Chinese cuisines and round table discussion on improving the impact of anesthesiology through educational programs. We are very grateful that leaders and members of CASA (Chinese-American Society of Anesthesiology) are coming to our events.

It will be long day especially for these who traveled long way across the continent and the oceans. However, we hope that you will enjoy this collaborative scientific event and your stay in San Francisco.

We appreciate the hard work from the organizing committee, the hosting department and the support from all the parties and the enthusiastic participants.

Sincerely yours,
